Almost every year for Hanukkah, Mt. Sinai Congregation in Wausau orders chocolate coins from a Jewish wholesaler. This year, however, the Jewish community in north central Wisconsin also can buy the coins, called gelt(Yiddish for money), in Wausau.
Sweets on 3rd, 615 N. Third St., offers the delectable treats, which traditionally are given as gifts for Hanukkah.
Sweets on 3rd, a new candy store that opened last month, buys the candies from Lake Champlain Chocolates. The company, which is based in Burlington, Vt., has its chocolates certified by the National Council ofYoung Israel. "Gelt coins can be a challenge to find," said Rabbi Dan Danson, spiritual leader at Mt. Sinai. "It's always nice when someone carries them."
Several grocers are carrying more kosher products, but a specialty candystore is extra special, he said. Nina Ricciardi, manager of Sweets on 3rd, said she wanted to offer a varietyof candy, things customers can't find elsewhere. "There's a variety of kosher candy in the candy industry," Ricciardi said.
Sweets on 3rd is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. There will be special extended hours during the holidays and special downtown events. They will be posted in the store or available by calling Sweets on 3rd at 842-7171.
